Huey Lewis may perform in Stevensville

Rumors have been flying that Western Heritage Days in Stevensville may have a special guest during the Downtown Saturday Night on June 14.

Grammy-award winning Huey Lewis has tentative plans to sit in with Joan Zen.

“We’re all keeping fingers crossed for no rain and that Huey doesn’t suddenly need to go off to Japan or somewhere,” Debra Hicks, lead singer of Joan Zen, said. “He wants to pop by and sit in and hopes that his schedule will permit that.”

Lewis was a guest artist on Joan Zen’s last CD, “Youniverse.”

“If he shows up it will be a great treat,” Hicks said.

It’s nice to have such quality bands this year, according to Joan Prather, executive director of the Stevensville Main Street Association.

First up will be Blue to the Bone, a unique bluegrass infusion combining traditional style and contemporary tunes and then Joan Zen, another well-known local group who’s last CD showcased such styles as neo-soul, reggae, blues, R and B, hip-hop rap, funk and jazz will entertain.

Prather anticipates a fun time in Stevensville that night.

Hosted by the Stevensville Main Street Association, Western Heritage Days begins Friday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the art show at St. Mary’s Family Center. The artists’ reception is at 6:30 p.m. and quick draw will be at 7 p.m.

Saturday the town will host a parade at 11 a.m., the art show will continue.

The Salish will come and present a cultural program of drumming and dancing at St. Mary’s Mission along with a barbecue, craft vendors and living history demonstrations such as tin can ice cream, weaving, wheat milling, branding, the buck skinners demonstrating hide tanning.

“We’ll be showing people the way it was,” Prather said.

The mission grounds and buildings will be open with tour guides available.

A dutch oven competition will be held in the Rocky Mountain Bank parking lot and they will be serving food around 3 or 3:30 p.m. The farmer’s market vendors will be set up there as well.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday the music will start, according to Prather. The dance and food court will be on Third and Main streets in downtown along with a beer garden.

“Downtown Saturday Night will be fun and it will be a great way to end the celebration,” Prather said.

Anyone is welcome to join them on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. for clean up, she added with a laugh.
